Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a powder having a high specific gravity and a wide distribution of molecular weight, by preliminarily polymerizing ethylene in the presence of a catalyst consisting of a reaction product between a magnesium compound soluble in hydrocarbons, a halogen-containing compound, a titanium compound, etc. and an organometallic compound, and copolymerizing the resultant polymer with ethylene and an α-olefin.
CONSTITUTION: Ethylene is preliminarily polymerized in the presence of a catalyst containing (A) a solid catalyst obtained by reacting (i) a magnesium compound, e.g. a dialkylmagnesium, soluble in hydrocarbon solvents, (ii) a halogen- containing compound except titanium compound and vanadium compounds, e.g. trichlorosilane, and (iii) a titanium compound, e.g. titanium tetrachloride, and/or a vanadium compound and (B) an organometallic compound, e.g. a trialkylaluminum, to give a polymerized ethylene in an amount of 0.01W500g based on one g component (A), and the resultant polymer is copolymerized with ethylene and a 3W20C α-olefin, e.g. 1-octene, to give the aimed copolymeric powder.
