Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain an electrolytic cell of alkali halide of a low cell voltage using an easy to mount cation exchange membrane by converting and forming the ion exchange groups of a cation exchange membrane provided with a porous layer by hydrolysis or the like in an electrolytic cell.
CONSTITUTION: The carboxylic acid group-contg. fluorine-contg. cation exchange membrane obtd. by copolymerization or the like of fluorinated olefin and a monomer having carboxylic acid groups has sufficient resilience and is mounted easily between the anode and the cathode. After the installation, the ion exchange groups of the cation exchange membrane are obtd. when -COOL is converted to -(COO)mX by heating in an aq. NaOH soln. Here, L denotes H or alkyl groups of 1W20 carbon atms, X an alkali metal or -NRR', and R, R' are H or lower alkyl groups, and (m) is the valence of X. The porous layer having a gas and liquid permeability, and no electrode characteristics, is formed by coating powder of TiO2 or the like on an ion exchange membrane followed by press sticking under heating.
