Abstract
PURPOSE:To flow molten metal forcibly to the rear side by the flow of a control gas and to obtain the shapes of penetration beads by blowing the control gas to the molten metal surface at the leading end of an electrode from both sides or front of the electrode. CONSTITUTION:In penetration welding for a root pass by gas-shielded arc welding of a circumferential joint of a single Vee groove of horizontal stationary pipes 1, control gas nozzles 10 are installed on both sides or front of a non-consumable electrode 3 which ejects a shielding gas 4 from the circumference. The control gas is blown to the surface of the molten metal 6 at the leading end of the electrode 3, that is, in the circumferential edge part of an arc 8. This is adaptable to overhead welding of flat plates as well, not only to the circumferential joints of pipes.
