Abstract

PURPOSE:To uniformalize durability performances of the bearings of back up rolls in a multiple cluster mill, by making diameters of the back up rolls different in accordance with respective burden rolling loads. CONSTITUTION:In a multiple cluster mill consisting of at least a work roll 2, intermediate rolls 3a and 3b, and back up rolls 4a, 4b, and 4c in one side, the ratio D4:D3 of the dia. D4 of a central back up roll, which simultaneously supports two intermediate rolls 3a and 3b between back up rolls 4a-4b, to the dia. of D3 of a side back up roll 4c, which is positioned adjacently to the roll 4b and supports the roll 3b, is made to be in a range of >=0.4 and <=0.6. The side back up rolls 4a and 4c which receive large rolling loads respectively can be made sufficiently larger by making the roll 4b which receives small rolling load smaller, and durabilities of the bearings are improved on the average.
