Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain an optical branching and coupling device which is superior in variance of characteristics, yield, and manufacture cost by connecting plural optical fibers, which are less in the sectional area of and the number of opening of an elliptic core fiber, to one end of the elliptic core fiber, and also connecting >= 1 similar optical fiber to the other end. CONSTITUTION:To both ends of an elliptic optical fiber 3, two optical fibers 1 and 2 which have sectional area less than the sectional area B of the ellipse and are less than the number of openings of the elliptic core fiber 3, and one similar optical fiber 4 are connected respectively by sealing. Beams of light entering the elliptic fiber 3 from the optical fibers 1 and 2, or 4 propagate to the elliptic fiber 3 without loss. The beam from the fiber 4 is branched to the optical fiber 1 and 2, and the beams from the fibers 1 and 2 are emitted to the fiber 4. Only the fibers are used and connecting technique for them is only required, so an optical branching and coupling device superior in variance of characteristics, yield and manufacture cost is obtained.
