Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a crystalline optical fiber which transmits light with a low loss by putting a crystalline body consisting of a halogen compd. in an inner crucible, putting glass into an outer crucible, heating these to melt, drawing a fiber and annealing the fiber. CONSTITUTION:In a double crucible method, a crystalline body of NaCl mixed with 20mol% AgCl as a halogen compd. is put in an inner crucible 1. Glass 2 consisting essentially of SiO2 is put in an outer crucible 3, and the entire part of the crucibles is heated to 950 deg.C in an electric furnace, whereby these are melted. A fiber is drawn through the hole in the lower part of the crucible, whereby an optical fiber 4 consisting of a core of the crystalline body 1 and a clad of the glass 2 is obtained. This fiber 4 is put in an another electric furnace where it is heated to 720 deg.C and is annealed to reduce temp. The graded type optical fiber wherein the refractive index of the fiber 4 decreases continuously from the center of the core toward the outer side is formed.
