Abstract

PURPOSE:To enhance responsiveness, by a method wherein, in a detector for oxygen concentration in exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine, a solid electrolyte is caused to self-heats resulting from the application of an AC voltage to it, and a second heating means is mounted around or in the solid electrolyte. CONSTITUTION:An internal electrode 4, such as platinum, is mounted to an inner surface of a cylinder type solid electrolyte 3, and an external electrode 5, forming an oxygen concentration cell pairing with the electrode 4, is installed to an outer surface to cover it with a porous protection layer. A power source 7, applying an AC voltage with a frequency, in which polarization of an AC component consists of mainly polarization of the solid electrolyte 3, is connected to the electrodes 4 and 5 through a capacitor 8 for checking a DC component. Additionally, a heating wire 6 is inserted to the inside of the electrode 4, and a DC power source 12 is connected through a switch 13. The constitution enables to obtain a detector which permits oxygen concentration to be reliably measured with a better responsiveness and at a low temperature even in low-temperature atmosphere gas.
