Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve a low-temperature performance, by a method wherein, in the measurement of oxygen concentration in exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine, a resistor, self-heating through application of an AC voltage, is mounted adjoining a semiconductor whose electric resistance changes corresponding to a change in an oxygen partial pressure.
CONSTITUTION: A resistor 10, consisting of, for example, ZrO2, and having electrodes 3 and 4, is located adjoining one surface of a porous metalic oxide semiconductor 9, consisting of, for example, TiO2, in which electrodes 7 and 8 are embeded and whose electric resistance changes corresponding to a change in an oxygen partial pressure, and a porous diffusion layer 11, consisting of alumina spinel, is adhered to the other surface. An AC power source 12 with a frequency, whose polarization consists of mainly polarization of the inside of the resistor, is applied between electrodes 3 and 4, a DC power source 15 connected from the electrodes 4 to the electrode 3, and a DC current source 16 is connected between the electrodes 7 and 8. An oxygen concentration, measuring the impedance of the resistor 10, can be detected from measurements of a DC voltage detector 18 and an AC voltage detector 19. This permits improvement of precision of and responsiveness to a low-temperature gas through self-heating of the resistor 10.
