Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable the manufacturing of a large-sized oxide soot rod, by heating and vitrifying the end of the oxide soot rod attached at the lower end of a rotating member at the initial stage of the formation of the oxide soot rod, thereby reinforcing the bonding state of the oxide soot rod to the rotating member. CONSTITUTION:Oxide soot containing glass component, etc. is deposited successively to the lower end of a rotating member 3 which is rotated and pulled up along the axial direction. The oxide rod 7 is formed at the lower end of the rotating member 3 by this process. At the initial stage of the formation of the oxide rod 7, the end 8 of the oxide soot rod 7 attached at the lower end of the rotating member 3 is heated with the heaters 6a and 6b to effect the semi- vitrification or vitrification of the oxide soot. The mechanical strength of the end part 8 is increased corresponding to the volume contraction caused by the vitrification and the oxide soot is bonded firmly with the lower end of the rotating member 3 to enable the manufacture of a large-sized oxide soot rod 7.
