Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain an optical fiber having high mechanical strength and stable transmissive characteristics by forming a glass film on the inner wall of a high silicate glass tube by a chemical vapor phase deposition method, inserting the tube in a reinforcing quartz tube, and spinning them. CONSTITUTION:On the inner wall of a high silicate glass reaction tube a core glass layer higher than the tube in refractive index is deposited by a chemical vapor phase deposition method, and this tube is formed into a solid rod while rotating and heating with a glass lathe or the like to obtain base material 3 composed of clad glass layer 1 and core glass layer 2. Material 3 is then inserted in reinforcing quartz tube 4 giving a smooth surface free from bubbles and surface defects. Inserted material 3 is attached to a spinning device, and one end of material 3 is heated to a spinning temp., softened, and successively spun as one body at a predetermined drawing rate to obtain reinforced optical fiber 5.
