Abstract

PURPOSE:To increase the recognition rate for characters where characters described in adjacent character frames are mutually connected between the character frames, by separating forcedly a connection of characters when they are connected at one part on the center line of the character frames, at the center line. CONSTITUTION:A character train described on a document is scanned at a photo electric conversion section 1, the photo electric conversion signal is binarized to check whether or not the adjacent character patterns are connected on the center line of the character frames at a detection circuit 3. If not connected, normal cut-out processing is made and the result is normalized at a normalizing circuit 4. If the adjacent character patterns are connected at one part on the center line K between the character frames, the two character patterns (b) and (c) are cut off compulsively at the center line K, a control signal P goes to 1, the cut off two character patterns are sequentially given to the circuit 4, and the 1st discrimination circuit 7 discriminates the characters by referencing the content of a slice level storage section 8 with the 1st ranking candidate character. If the characters are connected at two or more parts, rejection is made with a rejection instruction signal (q).
