Abstract
PURPOSE: To provide the titled contrast medium having excellent suspension stability, free from coagulation tendency, and having all properties required in a contrast medium, by adding choline or its salt to a mixture of barium sulfate and a suspension agent.
CONSTITUTION: One or more compounds selected from choline of formula and its salts (e.g. acid addition salts such as hydrochloride) are added to a barium sulfate contrast medium for X-ray containing barium sulfate and a suspension agent (e.g. carboxycellulose salt). The barium sulfate contrast medium prepared above has excellent suspension stability and no coagulation tendency in a wide pH range of 1W7pH. It is not only excellent in the stability to the gastric juice (i.e. the viscosity is maintained at a nearly constant level without causing abnormal increase) but also excellent in the adhesivity to the gastric plicae and the compatibility with the gastric mucin, and can represent the state of the gastric plicae accurately as the replica of barium sulfate. The amount of the choline in the medium is usually 0.001W5W/V%, preferably 0.01W0.5W/V%.
