Abstract

PURPOSE:To increase purification efficiency, in a monolithic catalyzer purifying a harmful component in exhaust has from an internal combustion engine, by flowing the exhaust gas only through the central part of the catalyzer immediately after atarting of the engine further flowing the exhaust gas fully through the catalyzer after warm up of the exhaust gas. CONSTITUTION:In a ctalytic converter 1, a monolithic catalyzer 2 is held in an outer shell 3 by retainers 5, 5' through cushions 4, 4', consisting of heat resistant material, simultaneously a wire net 6, for protecting said catalyzer 2 from damage, is interposed between the monolithic catalyzer 2 and the outer shell 3. Then a selector valve 9, for flowing exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine to the catalyzer central part 2a and the whole unit, is provided to the junction part of an inlet cone 7 and exhaust pipe 8 in the catalyzer converter 1. Then the selector valve 9 is controlled by a suitable control device, to both flow exhaust gas only through the catalyzer central part 2a at cold time immediately after starting of the internal combustion engine and flow the exhaust gas fully through the catalyzer parts 2a, 2b after the exhaust gas is fully warmed.
