Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture an alloy for the grid of a lead storage battery with small self-discharge and superior overdischarge and life characteristics by subjecting a Pb alloy contg. small amounts of Sn and Zn to a specified heat treatment.
CONSTITUTION: A Pb alloy contg. 0.3W3.0% Sn and 0.01W0.15% Zn is used as an alloy for the grid of a lead storage battery. The Pb alloy is melted in a nonoxidizing atmosphere and cast into the shape of a grid. This casting is rapidly cooled with a refrigerant at ≤40°C, heated at 50W250°C for 5 hr, and slowly cooled. Thus, a grid with superior mechanical strength, corrosion resistance and low electric resistance is obtd., and using the grid a lead storage battery with small self-discharge and superior overdischarge and life characteristics can be manufactured.
