PURPOSE:To improve the efficiency of high frequency reproduction by using an auxiliary core, whose magnetic tape contact surface is made of low-melting point glass, for a compound head. CONSTITUTION:Blocklike auxiliary core half bodies 12a and 12b are made into a welded block body 50 by welding the welding parts 24a and 24b with high- melting point glass. In the welded block body 50, grooves 52 are formed at equal pitch in such a way that bottom surfaces 51 and contact surfaces 13 of magnetic heads are nearly the same, and low-melting point glass is molded in the grooves 52. Excessive glass in the grooves 52 are removed, cut parts 53 are cut, and then work such as thickness polishing is carried out, thereby obtaining an auxiliary core 12. Since the hardness of the low-melting point glass part 42 of the auxiliary core 12 is lower than that of a main core 11 made of sendust, the low-melting point glass part 42 shinks in contacting with a magnetic tape and the main core 11 is elevated to hold the excellent cntact with the magnetic tape at a gap 23, thus improving short-wavelength characteristics.
