PURPOSE:To enable an automatic pipe replacing unit to be safely operated by detecting a broken belt through electrical means and as well by braking the travel of a movable rod in response to a detecting signal from the electrical means. CONSTITUTION:A photo-electric tube type detector 34 comprising a set of light emitting and receiving instruments 34a, 34b is arranged so that the optical axis P of emitted light between the light emitting and receiving instruments 34a, 34b may cross the path of a belt 33, and further, a limit switch type detector 35 having a roller 35a and a limit switch 35b is provided. Then, a braking mechanism 40 comprising a dog 41, a stopper 42 and a solenoid 43 is provided to a laterally moving mechanism 15 for a movable rod (not shown). When the belt 33 is broken, the detector 34 or 35 issues a break detecting signal, and therefore, the signal is delivered to a solenoid 43. Thereby, an armature 43a protrudes so that the stopper 42 engages with the dog 41, and therefore, the rotation of a timing pulley 22 is also stopped, thereby the movable rod is braked.
