PURPOSE:To simplify a modulation wave generating circuit, by a method wherein DC voltage of a given value corresponding to the modulation degree of inverter output voltage is used as a modulation wave. CONSTITUTION:A carrier generating circuit 7 for generating a carrier in triangular pulses, a modulation wave generating circuit for generating a modulation wave in a given DC voltage corresponding to modulation degree of the inverter output voltage, and a comparator 16 for comparing the carrier wave with the modulation wave and providing a synthesizing gate signal of the pulse width modulation inverter are installed. The synthesizing gate signals transmitted from the comparator 16 are divided in each phase by U, V, W phase dividing circuits 17-19 thereby gate signals in individual phases are obtained. In this constitution, circuit of the modulation wave generating means is not required to obtain the modulation wave based on sinusoidal wave and the modulation wave is given in DC form, therby the circuit constitution is significantly simplified.
