Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve fuel consumption of an engine, in a discharge spark plug, by applying negative electrostatic voltage to a mixture, ionizing the mixture, while applying positive electrostatic voltage through the discharge spark plug during the time from the top dead center to bottom dead center and continuing an electric discharge. CONSTITUTION:A net-shaped material of catalytic metal is insulated, arranged in a mixture passage of intake manifold or the like and connected to a negative electrode of a DC electrostatic high voltage generator to apply a negative electric charge to a mixture. While positive electrostatic voltage is applied to a discharge spark plug, protruded into a combustion chamber, almost fully during the time from a compression stroke to the end of an explosion stroke, then a corona discharge is caused, radially diffused fully throughout an area in the combustion chamber, rapidly ignited simultaneously an ion exchange is promoted to rationally perform electrochemical reaction. This spark plug is formed to such shape of a point sharp end 7 that an electric discharge unit 5 of catalytic metal is radially dispersed about the end part of a conductor 4 as the center, and the conductor 4 is provided with a conductive gap 8, applied with weak voltage before reaching the top dead center to prevent ion neutralization and electrically conducted by application of high voltage.
