Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a solid-state image pickup element with a high fulfillment factor (ratio of photodetector area to chip area), by arranging optical sensors in parallel along left and right both sides of a vertical register and alternately using one vertucal register with two trains of optical sensors. CONSTITUTION:An incident light is converted into a signal charge at each P-N junction of optical sensors 13 and 14 for storage. First, when the 1st transfer gate 51 is opened, a stored charge of the sensor 14 is transferred to a vertical register 2 and read out from an output section 4 through a horizontal register 3. Next, the 2nd transfer gate 52 is opened and the stored charge of the sensor 13 is read out to the vertical register 2. The fulfillment rate of a solid-state image pickup device can be increased to 40%-60% without using an external signal processing means by using the charge stored in both the optical sensors 13 and 14 of the vertical register 2 to transfer alternately to the vertical register 2.
