Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful for coating materials, etc., by the ring opening polymerization of a hydroxyalkyl acrylic ester or methacrylic ester with ε-caprolactone in the presence of a stannous halide except fluorine as a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A hydroxyalkyl acrylic ester or methacrylic ester is subjected to the ring opening polymerization with ε-caprolactone to give an acrylic or methacrylic ester having a hydroxyl group. In the process, a stannous halide except fluorine expressed by the formula SnX2 (X is Cl, Br or I) is used as a catalyst for the ring opening polymerization. The catalyst is highly active, and the reaction proceeds fully at a low temperature of 80W130°C with a small amount of the catalyst. The formation of diacrylates or dimethacrylates as by-products is slight. The copolymerization with another monomer provides a resin, having improved reactivity with a crosslinking agent, and rich in flexibility.
