PURPOSE:To minimize the horse power of a main engine required to obtain a predetermined navigating velocity and enhance economy by a method wherein conditions of a ship in navigation are measured, and the ballast amount is regulated to attain the minimum displacement in accordance with the results of calculation based on the measured values. CONSTITUTION:Meters 1a, 1b, 1c,... for measuring movements of the hull, draught, flexure of the hull, impact exerted on the bottom of the stem, the revolution number of a propeller, the temperature of a stern pipe bearing and the like are placed at predetermined places of the hull, and the conditions of the ship in navigation are measured by the meters. The required minimum draught is determined from the measured values, then the ballast amount corresponding to the required minimum draught is calculated, and subsequently stowage calculations for confirming stability, longitudinal strength and the like are carried out. When a problem is found in the stability, the longitudinal strength or the like as a result of the stowage calculations, the calculation is remade to obtain a ballast amount and loading positions which do not produce any problems, the calculation results are displayed on a display 3 and the ballast amount is adjusted based on the displayed results.
