Abstract

PURPOSE:To increase viscosity and to improve homogeneization and surface characteristic in the case of bringing molten metal into contact with a moving heat transmitting surface and cooling the same quickly by forming a magnetic field intersecting orthogonally with the advancing direction thereof with said metal. CONSTITUTION:Molten metal 3 is injected through a nozzle 2 toward the heat transmitting surface 1' of a cooling drum 1, and is cooled to a thin metallic plate 3'. In this case, magnetic poles 4, 4 are so disposed on both end sides thereof as to sandwich the drum 1, and a magnetic field is applied near the cooling solidification point A of the molten metal 3 in such a way that the magnetic lines of force thereof cross the metal 3. Thereby, high viscosity is imparted to the molten metal or the metal under solidification, and the macroflowing thereof is suppressed to suppress and control the crystal growth owing to the crystallization and rearrangement of atoms and molecules, by which the microstructure of the metal after the solidification is formed to a required shape.
