Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain an alkoxyaldehyde useful as a precursor for synthesizing serine, etc. by the Strecker reaction in high yield at a low cost, by oxidizing and dehydrogenating an alkoxyalcohol in the presence of a silver catalyst containing a small amount of copper.
CONSTITUTION: A compound of the formula R1-O-CR2R3CH2OH (R1 is 1W4C alkyl; R2 and R3 are H or 1W2C alkyl) is oxidized and dehydrogenated to give a compound of the formula R1-O-CR2R3CHO. In the process, the reaction is carried out in the presence of a silver catalyst containing less than 5wt%, preferably 0.1W3wt%, based on the silver, copper. The catalsyt is preferably used in the form supported on a carrier in an amount of 2W15wt% supported thereon and prepared as follows: for example, a carrier is dipped in an aqueous solution of silver nitrate and copper nitrate, calcined at 200W500°C in air and hydrogenated at 200W400°C just before the use in the reaction.
