Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain an alkaline battery having good high rate discharge performance at a low temperature and excellent shelf life by simultaneously regulating both the viscosity range of a gelled electrolyte and a volume ratio of a negative electrode to a sealing body. CONSTITUTION:A gelled negative electrode 7 is filled in a sealing body 1 also serving as a negative terminal comprising copper-stainless steel clad material, copper-stainless steel-nickel clad material, or iron completely covered with nickel plating etc. The gelled negative electrode 7 is formed in such a way that amalgamated zinc powder is dispersed in a gelled electrolyte obtained by adding a sodium salt of carboximethylcellulose acting as a gelling agent to an alkaline electrolyte comprising potassium hydroxide. The viscosity of said gelled electrolyte is limited to 500-5,000centipoises and the filling ratio of the negative electrode to the sealing body is also limited to 85-95% by volume.
