CONSTITUTION:When hardening an outer ring of a mast roller and bearing in one of a fork lift, the outer ring 10 heated to a temperature exceeding a transformation point is placed on a stepped part 21 of a supporting base 20. In this case, a supporting margin 22 of a diameter D2 is formed on this stepped part 21, and also a cover member 25 hving a marginal part 26 of an inside diameter D1 is fixed to an end 13 of the outer ring 10. In this state, the inside circumference is quenched and hardened by jetting cooling water from a jet hole 24 provided on a cooling water passage 23 of the inside of the supporting base, rotating the supporting base 20. At the same time the outside surface of the outer ring is cooled by compressed air jetted from a jet hole 28 of a pipe 27. In this way, it is possible to form the outer ring 10 which consists of a hardening part 11 having a boundary part 12 whose thickness of ends 13, 14 is t2 and t3 and whose radius of curvature is R, and a nonhardening and quenching part 15 of the surface, and is excellent in its strength and shock resistance.
