Abstract

PURPOSE: To easily obtain finely powdered metallic carbide having ≤1μm particle size at a relatively low temp. without using carbon powder by calcining the reaction product of halide or alkoxide of Si, V, Zr, Ta or W and carbohydrate.
CONSTITUTION: Halide or alkoxide of a metal selected from Si, V, Zr, Ta and W is reacted with carbohydrate, and the reaction product is calcined to manufacture metallic carbide. The preferred halogen of said halide is chlorine or bromine, and the halide includes silicon tetrachloride, vanadium chloride and zirconium bromide. Said alkoxide is represented by the formula (where X is alkyl, phenyl or halogen; M is Si, V, Zr, Ta or W; OR is alkoxyl; y is the valence of M; and m is 1Wy).
