Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a metallic carbide nitride at a low calcining temperature and in a short calcining time, by mixing a reaction product between a metallic halide of Groups IV, V and VI in the periodic table and ammonia with carbon powder, and calcining the resultant mixture.
CONSTITUTION: One or more metallic halides, e.g. chloride, of Si, Ti or Zr, are reacted with liquid or gaseous ammonia to give a reaction product. The resultant reaction product is then directly mixed with carbon powder or temporarily calcined and then mixed with the carbon powder, and then calcined at 1,000°C or above to afford a metallic carbide nitride. The metallic carbide nitride means (a) a solid solution of a metallic carbide with a metallic nitride, (b) a mixture of both and (c) a mixture of (a) with (b).
