PURPOSE:To decide the type of a bar code in an easy and accurate way, by collating the start of an input signal and the bar code at a prescribed position with the bar code pattern stored in a bar code pattern memory by a central processor and discriminating the type of the bar code. CONSTITUTION:The width and the space of bars of a bar code are detected in the form of the reflection quantity of light by a pen reader, etc. at an optical input signal part (a) and then converted into an electric signal through an electric signal converting part (b). The waveform shaping is given to the electric signal through a waveform shaping circuit (c), and the electric signal which has received the waveform shaping is compared with a prescribed clock pulse through a digital analyzing circuit (d). Thus a digital signal corresponding to the clock pulse is outputted. Said digital signal is stored in a central processor (e) in the form of a ratio signal. At the same time, the start bit, end bit and center bit of various codes are stored in a various bar code pattern memory (f). The contents of the memory (f) are compared with the digital signal given from the circuit (d) through the processor (e). In such a way, the type of a bar code is carried out in an easy and accurate way.
