Abstract
PURPOSE: To inhibit the contact of gaseous chlorine with the metallic case of a chlorination furnace by forming a flow of a gas not hindering chlorination reaction from the inside of the case to the center of the furnace when metallic chloride is manufactured with the furnace compoaed of a refractory wall and the case set around the wall.
CONSTITUTION: The wall 1 of a chlorination furnace is made of refractory, and an iron case 2 provided with space 3 to form double structure at the outside of at least the main reaction zone is set around the wall 1. A plurality of holes are bored in the whole inner wall of the space 3, and a gas leading inlet 5 and a gas exhaust port 6 are attached to lower and upper parts of the outer wall, respectively. A mixture of baddeleyite with coke is charged from a charging inlet 14, an electric current is supplied to a heater 8 to raise the internal temp. of the furnace to a high temp., and gaseous chlorine is introduced into the furnace through a leading pipe 10. At the same time, a gas not hindering chlorination reaction and freed of water such as dry gaseous N2 is fed to the space 3 from the inlet 5 and spouted into the furnace from the holes of the inner wall of the space 3 to inhibit the contact of gaseous chlorine with the case 2. Thus, the endurance life of the case 2 is elongated.
