Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent the decrease in cutting ability and the damaging of an arc nozzle in the case of cutting a metallic material by the arc using a non-consumable electrode by controlling the start voltage in the stage of transferring from the pilot arc to the main arc at the specific low voltage. CONSTITUTION:In a plasma arc cutter or TIG welding device which generates arcs by using a non-consumable electrode, a castable 10 is mounted via an insulator 8 to the anode 7 of an arc torch to insulate a nozzle 9 electrically. At the start of the work, a working gas is ejected through the nozzle 9 toward the work 5, after which a pilot arc is generated between an electrode 3 and the nozzle 9 with the low voltage from an electric power source 11. Next, the high voltage from an electric power source 13 is applied to generate a plasma main arc (a) between the electrode 3 and the work 5 with the aid of the pilot arc, whereby the work 5 is cut. The decrease in cutting ability by the arc generated between the electrode 3 and the nozzle 9 and the damaging of the nozzle 9 by the arc are obviated.
