Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the performance of a spark-ignition internal combustion engine, by providing a crescent recess and a wall surface on the inside of the cylinder head around the intake valve seat to cause the mixture to flow toward the exhaust valve to effectuate complete combustion after ignition to reduce the fluctuation in the cycle. CONSTITUTION:A recess 32 and a wall surface 33 are provided on the inside of a cylinder head 1 around an intake valve seat 41. The angle thetaj between the line extending from the center Oj of an intake valve 4 to that Oe of an exhaust valve 6 and the line extending from the center Oj to the point OR located on the outer edge of the recess 32 and most distant of all the points on the edge from the center Oj of the intake valve is set at 45 to 135 deg. at the face of a wall surface 31 in which a spark plug 7 is provided. Since the opening around the intake valve 4 has a larger area near the wall surface 31 than near the opposite side, the mixture flows to a region which is located near the exhaust valve 6 and has a relatively high temperature. For that reason, the evaporation of fuel is facilitated. The combustion after ignition is thus made complete to reduce the fluctuation in the cycle to improve the performance.
