Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a sintered hard alloy having superior cutting characteristics by enabling the coexistence of a CN type hard phase having high wear resistance with a tough WC phase in a crystal structure.
CONSTITUTION: A mixture of TiN with TiC and WC is hot pressed to form composite carbonitride. Powder of this carbonitride, WC and an iron group metal are sintered to obtain an alloy contg. a hard phase represented by [(a IVa group metal)A(a IVa group metal)C] (CxNy)z, wherein the IVa group metal is Ti or 2 or 3 kinds of metals including Ti, the IVa group metal is W or 2 or 3 kinds of metals including W, each of A and C is molar fraction, (z) is the molar fraction of the nonmetallic components to the metallic components, A+C=1, x+y=1, 0<A<1, 0<C<1, 4A+6C+4xz+5yz≥8.6, 0.05≤y≤0.3, and 0.85≤z≤1. In said hard phase a wear resistant CN type phase coexists with a tough WC phase, and the hard phase is bound with 20W30wt% iron group metal to form the desired hard alloy.
