Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic recording medium for high density recording, whose S/N ratio is high, by measuring the size of a demagnetizing pole section of a metallic thin film magnetic layer whose main components are Co and O, at right angles to the magnetic recording direction on a substrate, and setting it within a specific value range. CONSTITUTION:A substrate 5 consisting of a polyester film, etc. is made to run in the direction as indicated with an arrow along the circumferential surface of a cooling can 2 from a winding-off machine 3, and is wounded 4. A maerial 7 stored in a crucible 8 placed under the cooling can 2, and consisting essentially of Co is vapor-deposited on the substrate 5 by use of a mask 6 so as to become lower continuously within the range extending from a 90 deg. incident angle of to the 40 deg. minimum incident angle (theta), and O2 gas, etc. are led in from a gas leading-in nozzle 9. In this way, a magnetic layer is formed so that the size of a demagnetizing pole section M is within the range of 0.03-0.3mu by measuring it at a right angle in the magnetic recording direction, for instance, by 20% O2 concentration, 60 deg.C temperature of the substrate 5, 20% Ni concentration, and 1,000Angstrom /sec vapor-deposition speed. According to such constitution, a magnetic tape whose S/N ratio is high is obtained.
