Abstract

PURPOSE:To stabilize an electric current flowing between electrodes, to reduce the power consumption, to prevent a voltage drop due to a current reduction, and to obtain a stable display contrast by forming specified dielectric layers so as to attain perfect electrical insulation. CONSTITUTION:A transparent electrode 2 made of indium oxide or the like and having about 200Angstrom thickness is stuck to the inside of each transparent glass substrate 1, and a magnesium fluoride (MgF2) dielectric layer 3 is formed on the surfaces of the electrode 2 and the substrate 1 by vapor deposition in about 500Angstrom thickness. On the layer 3 an orienting layer 4 is formed. The layer 4 is obtd. by dipping the substrate 1 in a 1% soln. of octadecyltriethoxysilane and carrying out heat treatment at 150 deg.C for 1hr. It is a monomolecular layer having several Angstrom thickness. A liq. crystal layer 5 is composed of a nematic liq. crystal 6 with negative dielectric anisotropy and a small amount of a dichromatic dye 7.
