Abstract

PURPOSE:To stabilize the quality of automatic welding and to improve efficiency in saddle type welding of a base metal and a nozzle, by controlling the projecting length of a wire according to the height of a torch, and controlling oscillation width by detecting the width of a groove. CONSTITUTION:The outside circumference of a nozzle 21 such as branch pipe is sensed and a base pipe 1 is detected by using a manipulator. The output of an encoder 10b of a swiveling radial axis 11 is analyzed and the automatic saddle type positioning of a torch 15 is accomplished. Upon starting of welding, the excess or shortage of the wall thickness of weld is detected according to the rate of change in the height of te torch 15 with an auxiliary slide which controls the projecting length of a wire, whereby the quantity of welding is controlled. Prior to starting of welding, a stylus such as a detecting rod 23 is mounted on the same line as that of wire, and is brought into contact with the wall surface of the groove during working of the axis 11 to detect the groove width electrically, according to which the oscillation width is controlled and the welding is accomplished automatically.
