Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain an electrochromic display element provided with a stable reference electrode easy to manufacture, having superior shock resistance, and undergoing no potential change by using a reference electrode manufactured by forming a Prussian blue film on the surface of an electrically conductive material. CONSTITUTION:An electrically conductive transparent material such as SnO2, a metallic sheet, net or sintered body of Pt, Ni or the like, or a nonwoven fabric of electrically conductive carbon is electrolytically reduced in an aqueous soln. contg. a ferric salt such as FeCl3 and potassium ferricyanide or sodium ferricyanide to form a Prussian blue film 11 on the surface of the electrically conductive material 10 in <=10mum thickness. The resulting reference electrode 10 is set on a rear substrate 4 to obtain an ECD element. The film 11 keeps potential stable, has high shock resistance, and is not eroded by an electrolytic soln. Accordingly, a stable display is obtd. at all times, and the durability is enhanced.
