Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled substance in high purity in high yield, by dehydrating a catalyst solution prepared by dissolving previously a ferric organic organic carboxylate in methacylic acid, using it in the esterification reaction of methacrylic acid with 2W4C alkylene oxide.
CONSTITUTION: After a ferric organic carboxylate (e.g., acrylic acid, benzoic acid, salicylic acid) is dissolved in methacrylic acid to give a catalyst solution, which is dehydrated (water is removed as an azeotropic mixture with an entrainer such as methacrylic acid, benzene, etc.), it is added to esterification reaction of methacrylic acid with 2W4C ethylene oxide to give the titled substance. The amount of the catalyst used is proferably 0.5W2mol% based on raw material methacrylic acid, and the water concentration in the reaction liquid is made preferably ≤0.08wt% by the dehydration. The reaction temperature is 40W120°C.
EFFECT: The reduction in the reaction rate in the latter half of the reaction and side reactions are prevented. Scales caused by the deposit of a catalyst substance will hardly occur.
