PURPOSE:To record and reproduce data simultaneously on plural stripes, by performing the recording and reproducing operation of rotary magnetic heads and the transfer of recording and reproducing data through a buffer memory and a switching means. CONSTITUTION:At a reproducing time, data reproduced by one of read heads 6-1 and 6-2 out of data of stripes on a magnetic tape 4 which are reproduced in parallel by read heads 6-1 and 6-2 is transmitted immediately, and data reproduced by the other is stored in a buffer memory 12 and is transmitted following data tramitted immediately. Consequently, data of plural stripes are reproduced simultaneously with only a transmitting circuit 13. In the recording operation, one- stripe components of data, which is received first by a receiving circuit 14, out of data to be recorded simultaneously are stored in the buffer memory 12, and this data is read out and is recorded by a magnetic head 5, and transmission data is given immediately to the other magnetic head 5 and is recorded.
