Abstract
PURPOSE: To perform flotation of non-metallic inclusions in molten steel efficiently by specifying bubble diameters in the molten metal surface in the stage of blowing gas into the molten metal from the bottom part of a tundish and obtaining ascending flow of small bubbles.
CONSTITUTION: An inert gas is blown through the vent holes 3 of the board 2 in the bottom part of a tundish 1 into the molten steel flowing in an arrow direction in the tundish 1. At the time, the diameters of the bubbles in the molten steel surface are controlled to ≤2mm. With this value of the bubble diameters being a boundary, the removal rate of microparticles fluctuates considerably, and at ≤2mm, the shapes of the bubbles maintain a spherical shape and the bubbles float orderly. Therefore, the diameter d of the holes 3 are determined from calculation and water model experiment. Next, the bubbles formed through the holes 3 do not join to each other and therefore it is necessary to satisfy the equationIfor the spacings P among the holes 3. The width (x) of the ascending flow zone of the bubbles is set at the value specified by the equation II (D: the depth of the molten steel, μb: the existing ratio of the bubbles occupying in the section of the molten steel perpendicular to the flow direction of the molten steel) in order to bring the inclusions blowing together with the molten steel of average velocity (v) of flow into collision against the bubbles of average floating velocity (u) one or more times.
