Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve charge and discharge characteristics of a lithium electrode by a method wherein gamma-lactone with the predetermined number of carbon elements is used as an orgaic solvent for melting lithium salt. CONSTITUTION:In a secondary cell comprising lithium as the dathode and an organic solvent melting lithium salt as on electrolyte, gamma-lactone group (1) with five or more of carbon elements is selected as the organic solvent. For the anode, a metal oxide of V2O5, TiO2 and the like, and a stratified comound of TiS2, WS2 and the like are employed. For the gamma-lactone, gamma-volerolactone, gamma- caprolactone, gamma-octanoic lactone and others, for instance, are used. When the gamma- octanoic lactone is used as the electrolyte, lithium perchlorate is preferred if it is used within the range of 0.2-1N. In the case of the gamma-volerolactone, the above lithium salt is preferred if it is used within the range of 0.25-2N. For this reason, the conductivity of the electrolyte is improved, while the charge and discharge characteristics of the lithium electrode are better than the case of using butyrolactone.
