Abstract

PURPOSE:To increase the preservation performance and the liquidleakage resisting performance of a battery by using a non-woven separator prepared by reforming the surfaces of a non-swelling synthetic fiber so that the said surfaces have swelling property. CONSTITUTION:After a positive mixture 2 is packed into a metal case 1 in cylindrical form, a cylindrical separator 3 is inserted into the hollow center of the mixture 2, and electrolyte is poured into the separator 3. After that, a gel- like negative body 4 is packed into the hollow center of the separator 3, and the battery is sealed with an insulating gasket 7 and a negative terminal sealing plate 5 having a current collecting bar 6, thereby constituting an alkaline manganese dry cell. The separator 3 is made of a non-woven fabric prepared by reforming the surfaces of a synthetic fiber with non-swelling or small-swelling property, such as a polyacrylic system synthetic fiber, into reformed parts 9 so that the parts 9 swell into colloidal form when they are impregnated with the electrolyte. The above reforming treatment is carried out by, for example, hydrolyzing the surfaces of a fiber made of polyacrylonitrile used as a core body into acrylic acid layers.
