Abstract

PURPOSE:To perform an accurate measurement of erosion of a refractory body by means of a simple constitution, by a method wherein a plural number of photo transfer paths each, consisting of optical fibers having a reflection film at an end surface, is embedded in the refractory body, with which a furnace is lined, to different depths through the outside of a furnace wall, and a light detector is connected to said paths. CONSTITUTION:A plural number of bores 12-15, being different in a depth l from each other, are formed in a refractory body 1, with which a furnace is lined, through the outside of a furnace wall, and optical fibers 2-5 are inserted thereinto for securing until they bump against the bottoms of their respective bores. Reflection films 2a- 5a, reflecting light having a particular wavelength lambdax and transmitting other light than aforesaid light, are formed on the ends of the optical fibers 2-5. Pulse light from a light source 8a, havng the wavelength lambdax, is detected by a photo detector via an optical fiber 7, the reflection film 2a, an optical fiber 6, and a branching filter 9 for relfecting light having the wavelength lambdax. If the refractory body 1 is eroded into a dotted line, the reflection film 2a drops off, and as a result, no pulse light is detected. The other reflection films drop off in a manner described above, and this permits the reliable measurement of the erosion of the refractory body by means of a simple constitution.
