Abstract

PURPOSE: The titled fiber that is composed of a polyethylene terephthalate copolymer containing a specific amount of ethylenebis(p-oxybenzoic acid), thus being used as tire cords, because of its high crystalline orientation, high strength and Young's modulus and low heat shrinkage.
CONSTITUTION: Dimethyl terephthalate, ethylenebis(p-oxybenzoic) dimethyl ester, ethylene glycol, manganese acetate and antimony oxide are charged in a reactor and ester-interchange reaction is effected at a jacket temperature of 230°C. Then, trimethyl phosphate and other additives are added thereto and the system is gradually made vacuum and the temperature is raised to 265°C to effect polycondensation reaction. Thus, copolymer contains 0.2W10mol% of ethylenebis(p- oxybenzoic acid) as a dicarboxylic acid component, based on the total carboxylic acid components. Then, the resultant copolymer is melt spun and drawn to give the objective fiber of more than 80% crystalline orientation.
