Abstract

PURPOSE:To lower the character error rate, by making a preceding character valid and succeeding character invalid when the characters are scanned vertically and the output of the black line judging circuit is continuously black at a space between the characters. CONSTITUTION:Characters on a slip 6 on which alphanumerics, ''Katakanas'' (Japanese syllabary), symbols, etc., are written, are scanned for reading after a photoelectric conversion 7, and the read data are planted into a buffer memory 8 after they are converted into digital data. Then, the buffer memory 8 is scanned digitally by a black line judging circuit 9, and information that whether the line scanned is black or not, and the format information from a format input circuit 17 are inputted into a valid character judging circuit 10. A character separating circuit 11 sequents only valid characters and sends them to a recognizing section 12, by using the judged results obtained from the valid character judging circuit 10 and the judged results obtained from the black line judging circuit 9 as the input. The circuit 11 sends information that recognization cannot be made against characters which are not valid. In this way, patterns which have a possibility of misreading are rejected and misreading rate is lowered, when continuously written hand-written characters are segmented.
