PURPOSE:To read out each of hand-written slips and printed slips, both of which are written in the same field using the same format, by judging that whether the characters are hand-written ones or printed ones from the size of the characters. CONSTITUTION:A character input pattern signal 110 is converted into a quantizing signal 111 by a photoelectric conversion circuit 101, and character patterns of one line are inputted into a line buffer 102. A character size detecting circuit 103 retrieves on the line buffer 102 and average sizes (height) of characters in each field are obtained. From the information regarding the size of characters, it is judged that the characters are written ones when they are large in size or they are printed ones when they are small in size, and a signal 113 inssued depending on the judged result controls the change-over of a hand-written/printed changing over circuit 104. Otherwise, the characters are recognized by a printer letter recognizing algorithm and selected by a selecting circuit 109, and thus, recognized results 118 are obtained.
