Abstract

PURPOSE: To determine the reduced form of glutathione specifically with a high sensitivity, by using a novel glutathione sulfhydryl oxidase, specific for the reduced form of glutathione, and having a strong affinity therefor.
CONSTITUTION: A microorganism belonging to genus Aspergillus, Penicillium, etc. is cultivated to give a novel enzyme glutathione sulfhydryl oxidase capable of producing the oxidized form of glutathione and hydrogen peroxide from the reduced form of glutathione in the presence of oxygen. The resultant enzyme glutathione sulfhydryl oxidase is used to oxidize the reduced form of glutathione in the presence of oxygen to determine the oxygen consumption in the reaction solution or amount of the formed hydrogen peroxide.
