NEW MATERIAL:A chromanolcarboxylic acid derivative of formulaI(R is H, lower alkyl).
EXAMPLE: 2,8-Dimethyl-2(2'-carboxyethyl)-6-chromanol.
USE: Antioxidant: it is scarcely toxic and has high safety. It is applied to oil- containing food such as instant Chinese noodle, potato chips, fried rice cake, doughnuts, TEMPURA, or fried soybean curd to drugs, high-molecular-weight substances such as rubber or synthetic fiber, soap, lubricant and other petrochemical products.
PREPARATION: The condensation cyclization between a compound of formula II (R1 is hydroxyl-protecting group) and γ-vinyl-γ-valerolactone of formula III is effected in a solvent in the presence of boron trifluoride etherate at 50W100°C to give a compound of formula IV. Its ester is hydrolyzed under a basic condition to remove the protecting group of hydroxyl in the compound of formula IV to give the compound of formulaIwhere R is H.
