Abstract
PURPOSE: To manufacture a metal-coated optical fiber having excellent heat resistance, water resistance, flexibility, mechanical strength, etc., by coating a spun optical fiber with double metal layers using a vacuum metallizing means in combination with a vacuum coating means.
CONSTITUTION: The temperature in the vacuum chambers 1W3 and the through- holes 4, 5 is maintained at a constant level by passing a coolant through the paths 8, 8.... The quartz preform rod A in the first vacuum chamber 1 is lowered in the heating furnace 10, and its lower end is drawn continuously to obtain the optical fiber B. The optical fiber B is introduced into the second vacuum chamber 2 through the hole 4, passed through the high-frequency coil 14, and coated with a metal such as Al to a thickness of ≤1μm by ion plating (the primary metal coating). The primary metal-coated optical fiber C is introduced through the hole 5 into the third vacuum chamber 3 connected with the second vacuum chamber 2 in series, and a metal such as Al is deposited to the surface to a thickness of 2W8μm by vacuum metallizing. The final metal-coated optical fiber D is taken out of the third vacuum chamber through the hole D.
