Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the titled amorphous Al2O3 having a uniform particle diameter, by blowing a gas containing HCl on a melt or solid of Al, and burning the H2 in the mixed gas of AlCl3 with H2.
CONSTITUTION: A gas containing HCl is blown on a solid or molten Al heated at a temperature in the range of 200W1,200°C to form a mixed gas of AlCl3 with H2 by the reaction of the Al with HCl. A gas containing oxygen is mixed with the resultant mixed gas and burned or H2 gas is previously mixed with the gas containing the HCl if necessary, and the resultant gas with a high H2 content is burned in the gas containing oxygen. AlCl3 is reacted with steam in the formed oxyhydrogen flame to form Al2O3 and HCl gas. The resultant fine particulate Al2O3 is then separated from the burned discharged gas while at a temperatue of 90°C or above. The resultant high-purity superfine particulate Al2O3 is used as abrasives, fillers in resins, additives in printing ink, etc.
