Abstract

PURPOSE: To maintain the supply of the substrate constantly at a desirable state, and to keep the yield of the microbial cell or the product at a high level, by rapidly computing the amount of microbial cells in the cultivation liquid, and controlling the supply of the substrate to the level matched with the computed amount of the microbial cells.
CONSTITUTION: The means 8' for computing the amount of microbial cells computes the partial pressure of carbon dioxide gas in the cultivation tank and the amount of carbon dioxide gas produced by the microorganisms, according to the signals transmitted from the means 6 for determining the pressure in the cultivation tank, the means 5 for determining the flow rate of the exhaust gas, and the means 7 for analyzing the carbon dioxide gas concentration in the exhaust gas. Then, the amount of the microbial cells in the cultivation liquid is computed based on the signal transmitted from the means 9 for setting the numerical value. The means 8" for determining the supply of the substrate transmits the signal to the means 3 for controlling the supply of the substrate according to the computed microbial cell amount, e.g. a signal to increase the supply of the substrate when the supply of the substrate to the microbial cells is lower than the optimum level. The means 3 for controlling the supply of the substrate controls the means 2 for supplying the substrate according to the signal from the means 8".
